National Zoological Park

FUTURE PLAN OF DEVELOPMENT

The future planning is aimed at providing directions for development of National Zoological Park. In coming 20 years i.e. 2012- 2013 to 2030-2031 with a provision of review after 10 years. The proposal of development is based on the site requirements, visitor profile, availability of water and electricity, vegetation, climatic conditions and resources available with management. The recommendation of CZA, various institutes and the in-house planning committee have been taken into consideration in formulation of action plan.

Perspective Plan

Recently it is felt to promote NZP as a world class zoo.
Perspective plan is proposed to make it world class incorporating major works of approved master plan in ten years (2017 – 2026).
Priority new facilities to come up are Butterfly Park, Aquarium, Rain Forest, Primate Park, Desert Trail, Insectariums, Visitors.
Centre, Nocturnal Animal House etc will be developed with world class housing facilities.

Future Plans of NZP for Next Ten Years: Future

Zoo has an approved Master Plan – 2012 to 2031.
Zoo will accommodate 254 species with around 2000 inmates against existing 99 species with around 1200 inmates.
39 numbers of existing enclosures to be up-graded, 30 new enclosures to come up and 33 existing enclosures to be demolished.
Specialized animal facilities like Butterfly Park, Aquarium , Rain Forest, Primate Park, Desert Trail , Insectariums, Visitors Centre, Nocturnal Animal House etc will be developed with world class housing facilities.

NZP shall also have:

One way movement.
Clear segregation of visitor/service vehicles.
Simplicity in way finding.
A separate pedestrian entry.
About 65% area will be brought under woodland and water bodies an maintained green areas.
New visitor centre with modern facilities.
Thorough up-gradation of road network, water supply, surface drainage, power supply, visitor amenities as well as new residential buildings.
Master plan aims quality of animal care, exhibits, conservation education and sustainable management practices.
Conservation breeding has been re-organized in more scientific way.
Complete up gradation of Hospital infrastructure and manpower is planned.
New programmes in Conservation Education are proposed.
NZP aims to provide facility and platform for research.
Proposed revised plan taken into account of flood mitigation measures for flood affected areas.
New sewage, irrigation, drainage and electrical schemes are proposed.
Disaster management plan is proposed.
New residential buildings replacing existing Quarters are proposed.
A contingency plan has listed response to possible incidences which may happen.

Animal collection plan

The Zoological Park is categorized as Large Zoo by CZA and as per their guidelines NZP aimed to display animals keeping in view the local habitat, climatic conditions and the resources available as under:

Species of the local area/eco system	30% of the total species displayed
Species of the region	30% of the total species displayed
Species of Nation	30% of the species displayed
Selected exotic species	10% of the species displayed.

It is very difficult to stick to the above ratio due to non availability of required species, display area and resources. However, efforts are made in the collection plan to come closer to this ratio as much as possible.

Centre for Environment Education, Ahmedabad is being engaged for providing informative educational exhibits.

Butterfly Park

The existing walk-in-aviary will be converted into butterfly park (in house).
Natural topography will be used for making terraced flower beds on sides with larger water body.
A small fountain to create more humid area with extension of water body to 5336 sqm.
Free flowering traces on sides with SS poles shell support fine PVC net.
It will have 3-4 damp caves to provide shelter, hibernation, breeding and rearing facility.
