The National Zoological Park was a dream of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who envisioned the zoo against the majestic backdrop of the Purana Quila. Designed by Major Weinman of Colombo, Sri Lanka and the famous Carl Hagenbeck of West Germany, the National Zoological Park was opened in 1959. When the news of opening of National Zoological park spread, various state forest departments and individuals started sending "animal gifts" to the new zoo, with a pair of three-month old leopard cubs from the State government of Madhya Pradesh, being the first to arrive.
The National Zoological Park is providing Internship tranning to the B.V.Sc students from the Haryana Agricultural & Veterinary University,Hissar.
The Indian Forest Service Probationers from IGNFA,Dehradun and the trainee officers of Diploma in Wild life Management from Wild Life Institute Of India,Dehradun also visit this zoo for their field training.
The trainee officers of various forestry colleges and institutions are also imparted field training in this zoo.
The training and workshops are also organized for capacity building of zoo personnel from time to time.
